ROBERTO MATTA (Chilean / 1911-2002)
Roberto Matta is one of the most significant Latin American artists of the twentieth century. He was born Roberto Antonio Sebastián Matta Enchauren in Santiago, Chile, in 1911. He emigrated to Paris in 1933, and was soon a member of the Surrealists, alongside André Breton, Yves Tanguy, and Salvador Dalí. Initially trained as an architect, Roberto Matta worked for some years in the studio of Le Corbusier. He was taught painting by Gordon Onslow-Ford, and first exhibited in 1938 at the Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme. In 1939 Roberto Matta, like many of the Surrealists, including Breton and André Masson, emigrated to New York, where he met Marcel Duchamp. Roberto Matta's gestural semi-abstract style influenced Abstract Expressionists such as Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, and Arshile Gorky. His son Gordon Matta-Clark became an American sculptor.
